Top down windows up is a terrible look. The car equivalent of hiking your shorts up to your armpits. I guess you could come up with reasons to do it, but it still looks like shit. Embrace the outdoors! Top down, windows down.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

This hot take was sparked by a colleague responding to my email with a picture of himself and another co worker in some roofless FCA product they rented in Chicago. You guessed it, top down, windows up looking like a couple of jabronis. Just awful.

Happy Friday. I hope everyone’s got something fun on tap for the weekend.

Doesn’t help that those windows are tinted.

And I have absolutely done windows up top down with the heat blasting. I still get cold enough with the top of my head sticking over a Miata’s windshield frame.

I drive with the windows up on my Miata VERY often. I don’t care if it looks dumb, it is quite practical. I drive with the top down 100% of the time. Like no joke, cold, hot, rain, snow, dark, whatever. It’s top down like it’s meant to be. However, when it’s 20 degrees out and the wind is howling, having the windows up keeps the heat in a little bit more and makes it much more comfortable. On the highway in general, it’s much more bearable with the windows up too. The wind noise is just grating after a while. I drove across the country with the top down 99% of the time in November and the windows were also up a good 50%+ of the time.

It looks worse on some cars, especially if it’s not a 2 seat roadster. But I’m a very big fan of top down w indows up just because of how comfortable and practical it is.

Heat blasting, cool. Heated seats, cool. Wearing a full on parka, cool. Windows up,

When I had a Miata... the windows went down with the top, save at highway speeds, because the buffeting became so problematic, even with the little plastic wind fence behind the seats, that my spouse’s hair was in her face, and she couldn’t see... and sometimes she was the one driving.... the noise was deafening, and any loose lightweight item in the cabin was almost instantly blown out of the car.

Raising the windows above about 40mph... and the airflow seemed to calm down a bit.

The tinted side windows on a convertible thing is a hotter take than clear glass windows being up when the top is down.

But at surface street speeds or slower... yeah, the side windows go down.

On a miata, it makes a big difference in wind buffeting. The reci p e for least amount of wind (on the driver’s side) is the driver’s window up a few inches, and the passenger window up about 95 %. A top down/windows down miata is insufferable at 80+ mph highway speeds for any length of time.

This is a real problem with the Cabriolet. the back seat windows only roll down halfway because the rear wheel arch is in the way. Only way to fix it would be to remove the window entirely.

also I drive it top down windows up all the time. mostly because I’m t o lazy to go around and roll all of the windows down. I usually just roll mine down. and if i’m in town I’ll have the smoker window popped open.

Friday F un F act: I’ve never seen my own car while I was driving it on the highway. I either drive 55 and slower or 80, it makes a huge difference at 80.

Dont tell me I look like a nerd, you look like a nerd!

You’re not wrong I wear glasses and work in IT, but when I’m in the rag top...cool as a cucumber. Top down, windows down, maybe even pants down! I like the noise of the car and the wind.

The windows didn’t work on my first miata for about half of my ownership so I rocked this look for a loooong time. On the second miata, I usually did this on the highway. I’m not cool, and don’t care if people agree. I’m fully committed to being comfortable as much as possible. For example, I’m currently looking into yoga style pants that double as slacks. Most of my shorts have an elastic waist. And I wear steel toe boat shoes at work so I can slip them on and off. Your life is much nicer when you DGAF. On a side note, my group chat with a few friends is named “jabronis” lmaooo

The automotive equivalent of a t-shirt tucked into cargo shorts. Trying to be casual, but still too tightly wound.

Came in to post this.

I’m driving. It’s my car. And I don’t care how it looks. If I have to drive around and look at Nissan Muranos and any Acura made in the last decade, then you get to drive around and see a TDWU ragtop. ‘MURICA.

(I mean, I’m a 40-year old middle school teacher. EVERY WEEKDAY OF MY LIFE is me thinking, ‘yeah, that haircut is idiotic.’ But I don’t tell the kid this, because AMERICA. This is the automotive equivalent.)

I roll the windows up when I’m on the phone (bluetooth). It blocks enough wind that the other person can hear me and isn’t annoyed, while still letting them know I don’t want to talk to you for long because I’m enjoying the top down.

edit: my last two convertibles could be arguably called something else. The Fiat has full door frames in the cabriolet form and the RF is more like a targa
